Admission Requirements

    Admission to our doctoral programs normally requires a Master’s degree in the area of study for which a doctoral application is made.

    PhD in Music (Music Theory)
    ▪ A Master’s degree in Music Theory (or equivalent)
    ▪ Two essays (3,500-5,000 words) that demonstrate the ability to articulate and carry out research in music theory
    ▪ A statement (one or two pages) of background, goals, and research interests in music theory
    ▪ Three confidential letters of reference
